WHAT MALICE MOTIVATES COMPUTER VIRUS AUTHORS ?

Any opinions of the basic motivation
of this sadistic misanthropy ?

I don 't know, but I imagine that it takes some work to make one.

Is there any tangible benefit
for their doing that ?

In the past, it was mostly curiosity and street cred. But viruses and malware have become businesses and the current trend in the malicious hacking community is toward profit as a motive.

Now they'll do things like encrypt your documents and photos and make you pay them a small amount to get access to them or they'll delete them. Or they'll take over the computer in order to use it to send out spam.

There are still hackers doing it for fun, but the overwhelming majority of it these days are automated bots in botnets run for profit.

I see.
I have heard of perverted glaziers
who have gone out and broken a lot of windows in their areas.
Police caught them.

Reminds me of driving through Montana and having to swerve the big Penske truck around a board with nails sticking out of it. Next exit, about a mile along, had a tire repair shop.
