how about SPEAKING ENGLISH ? we had been taught in high-school that the english NEVER say fourteen days or two weeks; a FORTNIGHT is the only acceptable word. our teacher, who had lived for some years in england, WARNED us that, no matter how good our english if we would say fourteen days, everyone would know that we had a poor command of the english language. anyone want to guess what happened when we arrived in canada ... ? we got a lot of strange looks when we explained that we had been in canada for a FORTNIGHT ... after a while people would say : "oh, you mean to say you've been here for a couple of weeks?". so much for trying to speak tha eengllish laanguaage. hbg

Sometimes, two weeks could mean 13 days and 14 nights or 14 nights and 13 days. Wink

c.i. : i don't think i will be tempted to use a FORTNIGHT again ! it'll confuse the local burghers. my first boss introduced me to two english words i had not heard before : THINGAMAJIG and WHATCHAMACALLIT. this was in the days when the ibm tabulators required huge PLUGBOARDS for their operation, and he referred to two special wiring-tools by these names. i thought these were REAL names for these tools ! when i tried these words out on some other people when explaining to THEM how these boards should be wired, you should have seen the surprised looks on their faces. oh, english is a WUNNERFUL LAANGUAAGE , i think lawrence welk would have agreed. i still remember how he pronounced KNOXVILLE, i think it was something like NACKSVEEL. oh, the good old days. hbg

What has happened here is that I normally do not visit the English Forums on A2K, so I had no idea there were many others with the same English quote. Besides, I'm too lazy to scroll backwards. Wink
