I thought that I understood this use, dlowan, when you had used it before but I'm not so sure now. Is it like Gus's recent "Christ on a cracker"? Is it used for a number of situations, surprise, shock, to suggest that some situation is really sad [this is what I thought its use was]?

I've always heard it as a bastardization of the "Jesus Christ!" ejaculation.

It is the shortest verse in the bible.

And, as Robert has said, it is an ejeculation of the ilk of "Jesus Christ" and such.

However, I quite like the implication that the horror one has experienced is felt to be so great as to cause a putative alleged offspring of one of the manifestations of primitive humanity's fearful projections onto the screen of the illimitless void to cry out in anguish.

I could, of course, simply have said "bugger".
