Is this sentence grammatically wrong? Why?

Not wrong. It's the negative reply to, "John was asked if he had seen Karen in 1990."

I would say, "John hadn't seen Karen since 1990.", or "John didn't see Karen in 1990.", depending on what I wanted to tell someone.
