Re: Foxfyre (Post 3375984)
Fox, There's an article in today's San Jose Mercury News Editorial page about the olympic gold medal. The writer claims that only the gold medal is the most important, and on that basis China won - and not the US with the most medals.

I think that writer is somewhat biased in his/her opinion, because China has 1.3 billion people in their country while the US has only 300 million. If only the gold medal was important, than China should have won 4.3 times the gold medal the US won.

Also, the athletes in China train 24/7/365/year in their sport. Athletes in other countries do not spend 100 percent of their time training for the olympics.

What do you think?

CI~

I know you asked Foxie, not me, but here's what I think:

If a nation has a huge population to pick from, and
if that nation is willing to devote enormous time, money, and resources, to
finding the best potential athletes, and
if that nation is willing to devote enormous time, money, and resources, to
training those athletes, and
if that nation perseveres in that course,
then that nation's athletes are bound to win many -- and probably the most --
Olympic medals of whatever kind.

...and that nation is seriously screwed up.

I don't spend much time thinking about whether a gold medal means anything to anybody other than the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in the individual, thrill of competition, enjoyment in watching the event, and appreciation for the dedication necessary to achieve it. (Plus the lucrative financial benefits that come with the package.)

Here I think this discussion should be held elsewhere as it seriously derails the fun in this thread.
