Why rain on one side of street, dry on other side?

New Mexico has entered it's monsoon season with heavy rain, thunder and lightning. I've been puzzled by it's weather since moving here.

Albuquerque has the strangest weather patterns. It's known for producing heavy rain on one side of the street while being dry on the other side. East of the Rio Grande River is getting flooded while the west side is dry as a bone.

Anyone else live in areas where this happens?

It happens quite often in my street. If the wind is in the right direction, the houses on one side shelter the sidewalk on that side in a "rain shadow".

I've seen it go over the house and one side is wet while the other is dry because it didn't even rain on that side.

Like the house was on the edge of the cloud or something. Bizarre.
