I was wondering what everyone thinks about the movement to have a federal Department of Peace? I first heard about this idea on an episode about Activism for Change on
The Joan Kenley Show (great podcast!). Then I was in my home town for a visit (progressive activist locale of Ithaca, NY) and saw petitions for the same concept. Do you think we need a department to address issues of peace like reducing gang violence, defense spending, and coming to peace in the middle east? Should we have a Department of Peace?
Rather than creating another department, that should be the primary goal of our Department of State, the FBI and CIA, and the administration and congress.
A dept. of Piece would be interesting
"Peace" is just a word. Remember, America's Department of Defense replaced the former Department of War. Did changing its name eliminate war?
I could see in an Orwellian future a "Department of Peace" in charge of warfare and military matters.
I know you'll agree that it is better that peace be a policy than a name.
This concept reminds me of the old joke where someone gets to the Pearly Gates and Saint Peter asks the person would he like to see what Hell is like, before he enters Heaven? "Yes," the person says. Well, the person is surprised, when he gets to Hell, that there is a jazz combo, plenty of food, and people are dancing. He gets back up to the Pearly Gates and Saint Peter lets him in to Heaven. The person, once inside Heaven, sees that it is very quiet and no one in sight. He goes back to Saint Peter and asks, "Hell has a jazz combo, plenty of food, and people are dancing. And they were bad. I was good. No music, food or people to dance with?" Saint Peter replies, "For only three people?"
I like the idea of a Department for Peace.
I agree with CI that we don't need an extra department but it should be the ultimate goal of all departments.
Sometimes it seems as though the republicans (or those in these threads who seem to go on forever about war and guns) want war and violence simply for the sake of war and violence. I know that is a slight hyperbole, but...
agree with ci....or just finance a Bono world tour...

Kinda like 'Social Security' and 'Dept of Education'.

I also think that even if we had such a thing it would be co-opted by the military industrial complex. So often the efforts of progressive idealists end up in the hands of the... more organized. That lady on The Joan Kenley Show made it sound like such a good idea though... maybe a better idea for internal affairs?
The state Department would fill that hole in government if the president and congress would pay attention to putting good people in place and than listening to what they have to say instead of making decisions before the fact.
