I'm sorry, I've been to Kuala Lumpur only and cannot answer your questions
firsthand, however the best beaches on the east cost of Malaysia are (as I was told)
Redang (expensive though) a true paradise and very few tourists
Perhentian Islands, very popular with budget travelers, perfect for diving and
snorkeling.
Tioman Island, those are part of the protected marine park islands. Lots
of coral reefs, colorful tropical fish

The west coast of Malaysia:
Langkawi, also called the duty-free island, with the most tourists.
Pangkor Island, just a small and easy drive from Kuala Lumpur, lots of hotels
and nice resorts.
Borneo, the island is shared by Malaysians, Brunai and Indonesia
is a hot spot for well traveled divers. Large natural reserves and wild life,
jungle streams, waterfalls, and perfect beaches.

Hi Brahmin

I've been to Langkawi 2x or is it 3x. Either way you will love it. I hired a moped and went around the whole island exploring it. It's great, still unspoilt by tourism. There are some wonderful hotels if you can afford them........Tanjhung Rhui, Four Seasons

If not then I advise you just get the tickets and haggle with the hotels out there. That's what I did..............very reduced rates...........very accomodating and friendly people to westerners. I stayed in 3 or 4 hotels as i moved around the island and stayed there 2 weeks in total, then wrapped it up with 3 days in the expensive all inclusive Thanjhung Rui, was well worth it though..........

Kuah is a lot busier and is ok if you want to go in for some livelier/noisier days.
