Attn: Geologists/rock hounds -- what is this rock?

Years ago I was given this rock by a geologist.

Mo's school is having rock collection week and in hopes of keeping him from taking gravel to school I said he could take my very special rock.

The VSR is about 3x1 inches with a bumpy purple top, many lines in muticolors and a plain looking bottom (sorry for the cruddy photo).

Any first grade show and tell type facts that you could provide me would really help.

Many thanks!

Geode?

Seriously, I don't know ANYthing about rocks.

It is pretty, isn't it? I've had if for more than 20 years. I keep it with my other treasures.

*nods*

Geodes form in globs - little round balls with crystals in the center.

Boomer, your pic is a slice of one of these:

Thank you all!

Should he just say it's an amethyst geode or is there some simple explanation/definition that he can give for it?

The Wikipedia article on geodes gives a basic outline of how they come to be. Maybe you could reword it into something he can understand?

I only know of them because they were all over the place when I was up in Iceland.

There are a number of amethyst mines in Ontario. When I lived in Thunder Bay, people had huge chunks as doorstops.

CRYSTALS

Crystals are minerals that have had the chance to grow in the shape that they were meant to be.

Just like your DNA determines the colour of your eyes, how tall you will get to be and the shape of your bones, the chemicals that a mineral is made of determines what shape it gets to be.

We can tell different minerals apart by what crystal shape they are.

Sometimes minerals form in spaces where there is not a lot of room, so they don't have a crystal shape.

When there is just a big hunk of a mineral, it is called a massive mineral.
If there is a definite shape with easy to see flat sides, it is called a mineral crystal.

Most of the earth's crystals were formed millions of years ago.
Crystals form when the liquid rock from inside the earth cool and harden.
Sometimes crystals form when liquids underground find their way into cracks and slowly deposit minerals.
Most mineral crystals take thousands of years to "grow" but some like salt (halite) can form so quickly that you can watch them grow at home!

Some people think of crystals as clear pretty rocks that are used for jewelry.

Amethyst is a very common quartz crystal.

Crystals do not have to be clear, but those are the kinds you will usually see in the stores.

and from physlink

Quote:
Quartz crystal with pale lavender to deep purple colors is called amethyst. The colors are caused by traces of iron in the quartz and will be lost if heated. Amethyst is used mainly for decoration. The deep purple specimens are valued as gemstones.
