Illinois state Rep. Monique Davis’ heated public exchange last Wednesday with atheist activist Rob Sherman over the allocation of $1 million in state funds to repair a church is still going on—fortunately for Sherman, perhaps not so much for Davis—on the Internet, at least.

The Chicago Tribune via BoingBoing:

Davis: I don’t know what you have against God, but some of us don’t have much against him. We look forward to him and his blessings. And it’s really a tragedy—it’s tragic— when a person who is engaged in anything related to God, they want to fight. They want to fight prayer in school.

I donÂ’t see you (Sherman) fighting guns in school. You know?

IÂ’m trying to understand the philosophy that you want to spread in the state of Illinois. This is the Land of Lincoln. This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God, where people believe in protecting their children.... What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous, itÂ’s dangerous--

Sherman: WhatÂ’s dangerous, maÂ’am?

Davis: ItÂ’s dangerous to the progression of this state. And itÂ’s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists! Now you will go to court to fight kids to have the opportunity to be quiet for a minute. But damn if youÂ’ll go to [court] to fight for them to keep guns out of their hands. I am fed up! Get out of that seat!

Interesting piece in The New &Yorker of April 14 about the so-called 'faith" of the founding fathers of the USA.

The really sad part in all this is that this lady is a government official.
People like her belong in the church, dusting off the altar, but not in public office.

Right, CJ. And she hasn't explained yet what connection -- if any -- there is between firearms legislation and violation of the Establishment Clause in the First Amendment.
