I just got back from a conference about women and business. Mary Kay was voted as one of the worst ways for a woman to be self-employed. This was not a formal study, just based on surveys within the membership of this particular group. The criticism was that you have a limited market (friends and family}, and to make big bucks you have to work it like a pyramid scheme by bringing in other women to join the company. From what I read in this survey, most women gave up at around 6 months and ended up owing more than they made. Avon got even poorer comments.

Thanks for the info Green witch. We kind of did the math and came to the same conclusion. So my mom ducked out before she even made her first order. She bought the strarter kit, made one sale that paid for it and is using the make-up samples for herself and the leather hand bag are pretty nice so she broke even about.

Did you notice Amigo that a couple of Mary Kay women found this thread and put their links on to it? They were swatted off like SPAM flies.

No way! I didn't see that.

Me and my mom just decided, "Why the hell would people buy this crap when they could just go to any store they wanted".

And another thing that struck me was that the Pink mary Kay cadillac the lady was driving had no plates, like it was a loaner.

I'm in sales and marketing now. I started telling the stores I have, "Oh you don't need that." And the other sales reps were like, "what the hells wrong with you, are you nuts." But then the managers started to trust me and now I am selling alot of stuff and the managers smile when they see me, "here comes that nutty salesman that won't let me buy some things he's selling"

I'm a socialist salesman!

Why am I telling you this? I like to talk about my self

Wow amigo, you're my type of salesman, really.

Don't insult my intelligence by telling me I need/want something when I don't. If I see you're only going to sell me what really what I want/need, I'll be a loyal customer.

I'm glad your mom got a nice handbag out of the deal, breaking even is good.

Socialist salesman, I like that.

well......

a real socialist salesman would first steal all the best stuff for his family, because "if you don't steal from the state (or The Man), you're stealing from your family" -- one of the popular mottos of the 'real socialism'.

Then he would have lunch with 4 beers. Then a nap. Then he would sell stuff of crappy quality to a cousin of a friend who owes him a favor for finding real cheap cement for his country cottage construction on the black market..... etc etc.... THAT is a socialist salesman

I agree with ossobuco about not selling to friends and acquaintance. Don't get me wrong, she should focus on selling to people who are looking for skin care, cosmetics, etc. She can send a postcard to let her friends and acquaintaces know that she is selling Mary Kay, and that should be it. If they are interested, then they can contact her for service. It is not easy. But usually when people try it, they like it, and if they are provided with good customer service they become loyal customers. I started selling Mary Kay in October 2008, the profits are good; but like I said it is not easy. Just don't buy inventory like they tell you too. We are Mary Kay representatives, we shouldn't keep inventory; follow the Just in Time method. Once you place your order of 400, our cost is 200 plus tax and shipping that qualifies us to order at 50% for the next two months I believe. It takes about 3 days for me to get the product; to me that is fast.

Hello! My name is Ashley and I am a Mary Kay consultant, and I love it!! I started a month ago, and joined my mom's team! My mom is doing so wonderful. She recently had a stroke, and the doctors believed it was stress related due to her job. It was after that day that she realized she needed to make changes. Somehow, God brought Mary Kay into her/our lives, and I thank him everyday that he did! My mom is doing wonderful, and this company is WONDERFUL! I love what they are built on and everything they stand for. Its so much more then selling makeup! I love it, and would recomend it to almost anyone! If you have any other questions, let me know. My e-mail is ashleyeudy@marykay.com! Hope to hear from you! Smile
