Over (Across?) the River and into the trees...

Who wrote this poem about Thanksgiving?

It continues "to Grandmother's house we go. The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh..."

Never mind - I found it. Anyway, I had the first line a bit wrong; it's "wood" not "trees".

Well who??

The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.
The harvest is all gathered in
And chilly north winds blow.

Orchards have shared their treasures,
The fields, their yellow grain.
So open wide the doorway-
Thanksgiving comes again!

Marv. Smile

Lydia Maria Child.

Marvin - I like your suggestion, but what I am planning is to rewrite - or at least slightly adjust - "Over the river..." into something suitable for Hanukah. There's a holiday concert coming next week and I have to find something appropriate for that. There really isn't much, because Hanukah is really to celebrate a military victory which I don't consider madly relevant for the Christmas season.

I chose this particular poem because so many people know it, even if, like me, they had to dig around to find the author.

Wasn't the author one of those prolific poetess types on the fringe of the Transcendentalist movement?
