Actually it's required by law to prove the original program in the case of a computer is destroyed. Of course, the artist can recreate the image but obviously that would be foolish in more ways than one. A certificate of authenticity is suppose to state that the method to produce the print has been destroyed or defaced in a way that no more prints can be made. It's also a good sales point.
